Functions of Union Parishad

                                         Functions of Union Parishad

According to Section 30 of the Local Government (Union Council) Ordinance, 1983, the Union Parishad has been assigned two types of functions. Eg: 10 Compulsory and 38 Optional Tasks (First Section of First Schedule).

 

 

Mandatory Functions:

 

  • To maintain law and order and assist the administration in this regard.

    Taking various measures to curb crime, disorder and smuggling.

    Undertaking development projects in agriculture, plantation, fisheries and animal husbandry, health, cottage industries, irrigation, communication etc.

    Expand family planning activities.

    Ensuring the development and utilization of local resources.

    Preservation of public property like roads, bridges, culverts, dams, canals, telephones, electricity etc.

    Reviewing the development activities of other organizations at the Union level and recommending the same to the Thana Parishad if necessary.

    Encouraging people to use sanitary latrines.

    Registration of births and deaths, blind, beggars and destitutes.

    Conducting all types of census.

Optional Functions:

Management of village courts, arrangement and maintenance of roads and highways, arrangement and maintenance of public places, open spaces, cemeteries, cremation grounds, parks and playgrounds, general and official planting and conservation of trees, collection, removal and management of dung and street garbage, Controlling the construction and reconstruction of buildings in the Union, organizing fairs and exhibitions, helping widows, orphans, poor and destitute, promoting sports and education, arranging first aid centres, arranging libraries and libraries, for the safety, comfort or convenience of the residents or visitors of the Union. Take other necessary measures.
